What are SERPs?

What are SERPs?

This is a question that I get a lot lately, so I decided that instead of just giving its definition, to get a bit deeper.

Well, first things first…

SERPs are the search engine results pages , the listing of web pages returned by a search engine in response to a keyword query.

In other words SERPs are a site’s rankings for a particular keyword; a site’s positioning.

If, for example, a search engine user makes a query for “cheap flights”, the first site she can see is said to have #1 SERPs for “cheap flights”

An other example could be a query using the keyword “link wheel” for which ilianalola.com has the #4 SERPs.

Each site ranks in SERPs per keyword and not in general! This means that if someone tells you she can make your site be #1 in Google she lies unless she also tells you for what keywords.

Ranking hight in SERPs is the purpose of SEO. The highest a site ranks in SERPs the more traffic it gets.

Thus, it is important to track our site’s rankings in SERPs, so we can build a SEO strategy. For this purpose we can use a free keyword tracking tool. I propose Search Google Position tool which is great to get started and of course it is free!

To use it just enter the keyword that you want to search for, the site’s URL, choose your language and the geo-target and hit submit. The search will give you back the position of your site for this particular keyword. Unfortunately this tools works only for Google SERPs, but I think it is enough to get started.

Have a nice tracking….
