Make sure that your robots.txt file is not blocking search engines from the portions of your site you want to have them index. Free tools such as Google Webmaster Tools can show you exactly which pages are being blocked. Only disallow crawling on the pages you wish to keep private.

Google Webmaster Tools can also help you determine which of your pages are returning errors (http status codes). Continue reading

How to Avoid Hiring a Bad SEM Vendor

bad location

bad location (Photo credit: Gumdrop Sweet)

We’ll all face the uphill battle, as a small business, in getting our websites seen within Google, Yahoo and Bing searches without natural benefits of organic presentation.  With business owners seeking search engine marketing professionals to assist in ranking their keywords higher in astounding numbers, it’s safe to say SEM professionals nearly have blank checks through the eyes of hapless website owners. Unfortunately for small biz owners, spending thousands of dollars on a wrongly hired SEM vendor costs even more money by loss of business and having to rehire another company until you finally get your task completed correctly.  This being said, we’d like to awaken your inner sensibility when viewing proposals from potential SEM vendors to avert spontaneity in hiring someone to perform work they simply aren’t qualified to perform.  This piece will allow you to sniff out great proposals and File 13 the bad ones.

Never Make Price The Singular Factor

Common business logistics teaches laymen to accept the best price offer since ROI is always hindsight. In SEM nomenclature, however, purchasing search marketing services based on lowest bid can historically render lower results. Since SEM isn’t a money-back guarantee service, business owners need to have clear understanding of price versus receivables.  When viewing proposals and deciphering what’s being received versus what you stand to gain, leverage common understanding of competition for widely used keywords and recognize some costs may need to go into all facets of SEM, which include social media, pay per click and localization. Why Your Website Bounce Rate is Too Damn High

Most web masters know what bounce rate is and how it can negatively affect a website. Obviously the higher your bounce rate the worse your website is performing. Google analytics provides great insight to bounce rate and will give you the exact percentage of users leaving, the time they spend on your page and what pages they leave from. If your bounce rate is any higher than 50% your website is under performing. The ideal range for most well performing websites is somewhere between the 30 to 40% range.  In this article we are going to go over some common causes of high bounce rates.

Your Site Isn’t Mobile

Approximately 20% of all web searches are performed on mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets. If your website doesn’t have a responsive design or a mobile version, many users will have difficulty navigating your site. Continue reading

The Virtual World is Vast

Did you know that as of June 2, 2012, Google has a total visit of more than 1.5 billion? This figure accounts for 66.85% of all Web visits. On the other hand, Bing and Yahoo have over 243 million and 233 million views respectively.

If you add these digits, you get more than 2 billion (counting the visits on other search engines) views worldwide!

In addition to this whopping statistics, there are approximately 2.3 billion (around 2,279,709,629) individuals going online as of the first quarter of 2012.

Given such amazing numbers, how can you guarantee that these people spot your website whenever they search the Net?

Stay on Top the Web

Now, most webmasters will probably say that you can obtain great visibility through search engine optimisation (SEO). Then again, this answer is very general as SEO encompasses several aspects.

If you wish to be one of the sites that dominate the World Wide Web and remain on top, one highly effective strategy is integrating your pages with phrases that many users are looking for.

Keyword Research

Perform Keyword Research

But before you can incorporate your webpages with search terms, you need to create a list of terms with the two main characteristics below.

  • Relevant – related to your niche
  • Popular – plenty of people are using the word or phrase in their queries

And, to help you come up with the best list, you must conduct a research. Afterwards, you have to analyse the data you have obtained. You will know how to look for the right keywords and how to study these through the insights below.

- Know your goals

Yes, as with other decision-making circumstances, you have to come up with objectives for better judgement. Furthermore, you must have aims as basis for your project. You can make this step easier by pondering on these questions.

  • What is my website about?
  • Who are my target users?
  • What are their needs?

- Pick initial keywords

Since you need to start somewhere, you should choose general search terms and use these to size up your competition. Look up these words and then, analyse the search results. Doing this allows you to determine which sites are already ranking for your main keywords. In turn, you can gain basic understanding on how to use these terms to your advantage.

- Gather data from various sources

You can perform a more thorough research by looking into different aspects such as the following:

  • Your niche – Find suitable words based on your comprehension about your website’s theme.
  • Your audience – Look for ideal keywords based on the search terms that your target users might use.
  • Your competitors – Check out their sites to help you understand their methods and determine ways to have an edge against them.
  • Analysis – Use online tools to come up with accurate and real-time data.

- Find key phrases

Oftentimes called “long-tailed keywords”, these are generally a combination of particular query terms, which the people may type in search boxes. If, for instance, your main keyword is “health”, you can include the phrases “health clinic”, “health insurance”, and “health centre”.

As you can see on the image below, the sample phrases have high global and local monthly searches. This means that many individuals are using the words in their queries.

Then again, you cannot just use any widely used key phrase. It must relate to your niche and content too. Well, this reminder brings us to the next step.

- Stick to highly relevant target keywords

There are search terms that drive huge traffic to your site, and there those that only bring in your target visitors.

While it is good to have plenty of users directed to your portal, the possibility that they cannot find what they need on the landing page can lead to a high bounce rate. Therefore, you must focus on the most appropriate keywords to help you obtain quality traffic only.

- Look for competitive keywords

Based on the last step, you can see that using the right search terms have a huge impact on your traffic and types of visitors. You can aim your content at the right group by finding out which words or phrases drive more users to your site apart from idea of simply choosing relevant ones.

Now, this step tend to be complicated if you have no idea how to do it. You can make the task easier by using tracking tools and methods, so you will know which terms are drawing in a high number of quality users.

- Monitor the keywords’ performance

When you finally integrate a few words from your list to your content, you do not end at that. You must also keep track of their effectiveness and your entire campaign’s efficiency by employing analytics software and tools.

So, there you have it. With this guide, researching for the best keywords will not be too difficult. What is more, you have a better chance at getting quality traffic.

As a final tip, take time to modify your list given that there are always changes with the Web.

How to increase your page rank

This is a common question among webmasters, especially after the Penguin Update (For more info on the update click here) on the 24 of April. until then it was pretty easy to get a high page rank; a well organized link building  strategy was enough. After the latest page rank update though, a few days after the Penguin update was released, a lot of major popular websites saw their PR decrease and many new ones gained a pretty high one.

Is this an algorithm bug, or just a new SEO generation? Although many webmasters complain about these unfair (for most) changes, Matt Cutts haven’t made any announcements yet unfortunately in my opinion are here to stay.

Having that in mind let’s see what should be done from now on. Continue reading

Google’s search quality changes you can use to rank higher

A few weeks before Penguin update, Google announced 50 new search quality changes. Some of them are really interesting, since they can be used to help us rank higher in SERPs.

Let’s see the most important of them:

  1. Newsgroup scoring: Google now scores newsgroups better and thus ranks them higher in SERPs for a particular query. Because of that, newsgroups have become a better website promotion technique. Try to participate more actively on them or create a few of your own, discuss on them about your niche and promote your site and services. Continue reading

What are SERPs?

What are SERPs?

This is a question that I get a lot lately, so I decided that instead of just giving its definition, to get a bit deeper.

Well, first things first…

SERPs are the search engine results pages , the listing of web pages returned by a search engine in response to a keyword query.

In other words SERPs are a site’s rankings for a particular keyword; a site’s positioning.

If, for example, a search engine user makes a query for “cheap flights”, the first site she can see is said to have #1 SERPs for “cheap flights” Continue reading
